Mist over the volcanic highlands of the Auvergne
Chaîne des Puys · Auvergne · France

Nature's force
in every sip

Rain falls on eighty volcanoes. Five years later, filtered through six layers of ancient rock, it reaches us — untouched, unchanged, bottled at the source.

01 — The origin

Volvic's story began thirty-five million years ago, when the Plateau des Dômes rose and the Limagne plain collapsed. A hundred thousand years ago, magma pushed up through the fractures and built the Chaîne des Puys — eighty volcanoes standing in a line.

Then, 13,500 years ago, the Puy de la Nugère erupted and filled the ancient valley below. What it left behind is the immense natural filter our water still travels through today: an impervious volcanic bedrock, sealed from the surface, holding an underground reserve that renews itself with every rainfall.

02 — The descent

Six layers.
Five years.

Rainwater enters the impluvium and begins a slow descent. No pumps, no filters, no chemistry — only rock, sand and time. Select a layer to follow the journey.

07 — Heritage

A hundred years
of the same spring

The spring was first tapped in 1922 and has been bottled where it emerges since 1938. Everything since has been a matter of protecting what was already there.

08 — The rock itself

The stone that built a black cathedral

The same lava flow that filters our water has been quarried at Volvic for centuries. Dense, dark and almost impervious, pierre de Volvic was chosen in the thirteenth century for the cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Clermont-Ferrand — begun in 1248 and still standing black against the Auvergne sky.

That is the point worth holding on to: the rock is impermeable enough to build a cathedral out of, and porous enough, higher up the flow, to hold five years of rain. Volvic takes its name from the Latin volcani vicus — the village of the volcano.

Our Products — Nine

One water, and everything we make with it

Still, sparkling, infused, brewed. Every bottle starts at the Clairvic spring — what changes is what we add, and how little of it.

What "natural mineral water" actually means

It is a legal status, not a marketing phrase. In France it is granted by the Ministry of Health — Volvic has held it since 1965 — and it comes with obligations that shape everything on this page.

What the bottle is made of

Since early 2025 every Volvic bottle body is made from 100% recycled PET — caps and labels excluded. Recycled PET is processed back to the same food-grade specification as virgin PET, so nothing about the water changes.

Where to find the batch code

Every pack carries an ink-jet code printed at the moment of filling. On bottles it sits on the shoulder or the neck, just above the label. On cans it is on the base, and on multipacks it is printed on the outer film. Read together with the best-before date, it identifies the line, the hour and the water lot — which is how a single bottle can be traced back through more than three hundred quality checks.
